To Compete with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888

Samsung Electronics is to unveil its new mobile application processor Exynos 2100 on Jan. 12.

Samsung Electronics will unveil its new mobile application processor (AP) Exynos 2100 on Jan. 12.

The company has recently released an invitation video for "Exynos On 2021: The Return of the All-New Exynos.” In the 25-second video clip, a square object that looks like a chipset appears splendidly. It is divided into several pieces and then merged into one, and finally becomes a chipset with Samsung's Exynos logo.

This is the first time for Samsung Electronics to hold a separate event for Exynos chips.

The Exynos 2100, a high-end product, is expected to show a performance that is on par with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888. The new AP is produced using a 5-nm EUV lithography process and ARM's reference core. Although Samsung Electronics’ previous Exynos series were loaded with CPUs of Samsung’s own development, the new model has ARM cores for a stronger performance.

Samsung Electronics has been working with British semiconductor design company ARM and U.S. semiconductor design company AMD to strengthening the technological power of its high-performance AP Exynos and catch up with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon.

"The Exynos 1080 announced at the end of 2020 was produced using the 5-nm EUV lithography process although it is a mid-end product,” said an analyst at Kiwoom Securities Co. “The new AP is expected to expand its market share based on an outstanding product performance including supporting 5G communications and 200-million-pixel cameras."

Meanwhile, market research firm Counterpoint Research reported that Taiwan’s MediaTek ranked first in the global smartphone AP market in the third quarter of 2020 with a 31 percent share, followed by Qualcomm with 29 percent and Samsung Electronics, HiSilicon and Apple with a 12 percent share, respectively.
