A driving motor, a key component of the electric vehicle powertrain

Korean and foreign automakers are set to showcase their new vehicle technologies at CES 2021, the world's largest electronics and information technology exhibition which will be held online from Jan. 11-14.

The most interesting point in the automobile sector at CES 2021 is a keynote speech by GM CEO Mary Barra on Jan. 12. Barra will deliver a speech under the theme of the future of electric vehicles and announce strategies for the electrification of various GM brands. GM has been somewhat lukewarm about going for electric vehicles. But it appears to be making efforts to create the image of a leading electric vehicle maker through CES 2021.

Mercedes-Benz, which introduced its future concept car Vision Avatar in 2020, is planning to unveil its artificial intelligence-based MBUX Hyperscreen concept car in 2021. A hyperscreen is a screen mounted on a vehicle dashboard that recognizes users’ voices and provides various information or services.

Magna International, which is planning to set up a joint venture with LG Electronics, will lay out details of its future electrification business via the Magna Live Event at CES 2021. Bosch, the world's number one auto parts maker, and Bridgestone, a tire maker, will have discussions about the possibility of developing the in-vehicle infotainment system at CES 2021.

From Korea, Mando and GS Caltex will participate in CES 2021 for the first time to showcase the "Steer by Wire (SbW)" system, drone delivery and a future gas station, but Hyundai Motor will not. Moreover, startups will introduce the latest technologies such as solar electric vehicles and autonomous mining technology. Mando's SbW System features technology that enables drivers to freely attach steering wheels to cars. It is considered a key technology for future cars. GS Caltex will introduce a future gas stations that will serve as a mobility and logistics hub for long-distance drone flying technology that can carry items between islands and land, charging electric and hydrogen cars, car sharing, micromobility, and drone delivery.
