Samsung Also Sued for Violation of FRAND Principle

Ericsson has filed a patent infringement suit against Samsung Electronics with a U.S. court.

Ericsson, a Swedish telecommunications equipment maker, has reportedly filed a patent infringement suit against Samsung Electronics with a U.S. court.

Ericsson filed the suit with a U.S. federal court in Texas, demanding Samsung Electronics pay royalties for the use of its mobile technologies used in Samsung Electronics' smartphones and tablet PCs, according to foreign media reports on Jan. 5.

Ericsson also filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics with the Eastern District Court of Texas in December 2020, accusing the Korean tech giant of violating the Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) principle, which obliges a standard patent holder to allow patent users to use its patent in a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory manner.

Ericsson said it wanted to deal with Samsung's violation of its FRAND obligations and receive a court ruling that Ericsson kept its promise.

"We will take action after confirming the petition," Samsung Electronics said in response.
