A Display That Creates Sounds without a Speaker

An LG Display model enjoys a game with a 48-inch bendable CSO display.

LG Display announced on Jan. 3 that it will unveil a 48-inch bendable cinematic sound OLED (CSO) display optimized for gaming at CES 2021, which will kick off online on Jan. 11 (U.S. local time)

The 48-inch bendable CSO panel can be freely folded and unfolded as it uses paper-thin organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels. The display can be bent up to 1,000R.

Users can use the bendable display as a flat screen when watching TV and as a curved screen when playing a game. A curved screen provides a uniform viewing distance from the center to the edge, maximizing viewers’ visual immersion.

This product is loaded with CSO technology that enables the OLED panel to create sounds without a speaker. Users can feel as if characters on the screen are speaking directly, which offers a vivid sense of reality. A curved screen maximizes its sound effects by focusing sounds on users..

In particular, the 48-inch bendable CSO display uses an ultra-thin film CSO panel, which is more advanced than the previous one. LG Display slashed the thickness of exciters, a component that makes sound by vibrating OLED panels, from 9mm to 0.6mm to allow users to enjoy overwhelming sounds.

OLED displays are gaining popularity among gamers as they offer an overwhelming performance such as clear and 3D images, a fast response speed of 0.1ms and a refresh rate of 120 pictures per second. They also express natural images with no vibration or interruption thanks to their wide range of variable frequencies.
