At the Request of Samsung Electronics

Samsung Display will continue to produce LCD TV panels in 2021. The Korean display giant had originally planned to completely withdraw from the LCD market in March 2021 due to a price war with Chinese companies. But it changed its mind at the request of Samsung Electronics and decided to extend LCD TV panel production.

Yet the company has not decided until when the LCD panel production is extended. Many industry insiders believe that LCD production will be extended until the end of 2021.

The landscape of the global TV market changed in 2020 due to the spread of COVID-19. TV sales around the world jumped, triggering a sharp rise in prices of LCD panels for TVs.

In response, Samsung Display extended the production period of LCD panels to March 2021 and recently decided to continue to roll out LCDs even after March 2021. "If Samsung Display closes its LCD business, Chinese companies are likely to raise prices of LCD panels," an industry analyst said. "It seems that Samsung Electronics asked Samsung Display to extend its LCD production to maintain its bargaining power in negotiations with Chinese display makers."
