Green Vessel Development Plan Unveiled
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy released a green ship development plan on Dec. 23.
The plan is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent by the use of hydrogen vessels. The ministries are going to complete basic technologies and techniques within five years and establish mass hydrogen supply infrastructures by 2030. LNG vessels will fill the gap until the completion of the first zero-carbon ship.
According to the plan, R&D projects will be launched for more advanced and cost-effective LNG, electric and hybrid propulsion. Before the first zero-carbon ship, low-carbon technologies and techniques such as mixed-fuel propulsion and high-efficiency propellers will be employed for greenhouse gas reduction.
When it comes to the zero-carbon technology including hydrogen and ammonia fuel cells, the ministries will initiate preliminary feasibility studies and invest 960 billion won in R&D next year. The first R&D phase will be completed in 2025 and every required technology and technique will be prepared by 2030.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, this plan's environmental contribution for 10 years to come is 1.3 trillion won, including a greenhouse gas reduction of 400,000 tons and a particulate matter reduction of 3,000 tons.
