Big Brother Data

The Korea Transportation Safety Authority has established a big data analysis system within this year for the multifaceted examination of vehicle defects, which are becoming more and more frequent these days due to an increasing number of electronic parts in vehicles. The big data system collects defect information and data from the related website and portals to predict and analyze defect elements.

The Authority is planning to link the system to its existing Auto Recall Center so that the public can get easy access to such information. An application programming interface (API) is also provided so that external services can also access the data.

Nowadays, big data is increasingly utilized as a type of predictive technology in the auto industry, in which each car is manufactured through the combination of more than 20,000 parts. Most vehicle defects are found in unexpected situations after product release, which results in costly, large-scale recalls. However, such defects can be predicted and forestalled with big data technology.

Korean auto parts manufacturers are striving to minimize errors by means of big data analysis as well. The Auto Parts Industry Informatization Forum, which is a group of auto parts makers located in Ulsan City, has stored manufacturing information in the form of big data and analyzed it for in-depth examination.
