Another Recall for the Kona

The Kona electric vehicle from Hyundai Motor Co.

Hyundai Motor's electric vehicle (EV) Kona, which had been voluntarily recalled due to fire risks, was again included in a recall list. This time, the model is recalled for safety risks stemming from brakes.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on Dec. 8 that 82,657 units of 47 vehicle models manufactured or imported by Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors, Toyota Korea and Ford Sales Service Korea will be recalled as defects were found.

EVs from Hyundai and Kia accounted for more than 60 percent of the recall volume. The two carmakers will recall 52,759 units, including 40,000 units of the Kona, and the Nexo, a hydrogen vehicle from Hyundai, and the Kia Soul. These vehicles were found to have the problem of their brake pedals becoming heavy when the brake warning lamps are  lit. This is due to a software defect in their power brake systems. The recall was decided because of the possibility of braking failures.

Toyota Korea was ordered to recall 15,024 units. Defective fuel pump parts were found in 24 models including the Lexus RX450h and the Camry Hybrid. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport believes that if the fuel pump fails to operate due to a faulty impeller, the engine may turn off while driving.

The ministry also ordered Ford Sales Service Korea to recall 13,549 units of seven models including the MKZ, the Mustang, and the Nautilus. For four models (12,172 units) including the MKZ, front wheel brake hoses are to blame for the recall. Experts confirmed that their hoses were less durable, leaking brake fluid, which may result in longer braking distances. In addition, 808 units of the Mustang will be recalled due to a lack of durability in brake pedal parts.
