Trains Feature Zero-speed Regenerative Braking

Unmanned electric train Hyundai Rotem supplied in Istanbul, Turkey

Hyundai Rotem’s unmanned electric trains in Istanbul, Turkey were put into operation on Oct. 28. The South Korean company supplied the 120 railroad cars based on its 156 billion won contract in 2017.

The cars are characterized by using zero-speed regenerative braking. It is to decelerate the car at a constant rate so that it can be stopped at the right position, ride comfort can be improved, noise during the deceleration can be reduced and energy efficiency can be improved. In addition, brake pad wear can be reduced and, as such, repair and maintenance costs can be reduced along with particulate matter in tunnels.

Turkey is one of Hyundai Rotem’s major export destinations. The company has been the largest player in the local market for about 20 years and its current market share is 60 percent. It has supplied approximately 1,900 light rail vehicles, tram cars, electric train cars, and the like to Turkey while making efforts for production localization and export competitiveness enhancement.
