The late Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee

Samsung Electronics chairman Lee Kun-hee died at the age of 78 at 3:59 a.m. Oct. 25 after over six years of suffering from acute myocardial infarction.

The late chairman became the head of Samsung Group in 1987 after the death of his father and founder Lee Byung-chul. He boosted the market capitalization of the group from one trillion won to 396 trillion won from that year to 2018.

In 2006, it became the world’s largest TV manufacturer by beating Sony and the world’s largest smartphone seller by beating Apple. Under his leadership, Samsung Group rose to the top in more than 20 global markets, including memory chip and mobile phone.

The autonomous management of each subsidiary of Samsung Group is predicted to be maintained under his son’s leadership. Samsung Electronics vice chairman Lee Jae-yong has led the third-generation management of the group with subsidiary presidents since 2014. The Future Strategy Office of the group, which functioned as a control tower, was disbanded in 58 years in 2017. At present, the third-generation management can be broadly divided into the electronics subsidiaries including Samsung Electronics, the non-manufacturers including Samsung C&T and the financial arms including Samsung Life Insurance.
