Ukraine Reportedly Show Interest in APR 1400 Reactor

The Korean-type new nuclear reactor APR1400

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) is moving to win Ukraine's new nuclear power plant project. Four years ago, KHNP signed an agreement to resume the nuclear power plant project that Ukraine had stopped.

KHNP announced on Sept. 18 that it has recently discussed with Ukraine's state-run nuclear power company Energotom its participation in a new nuclear power plant project to be built in the western Ukrainian province of Rivne.

Ukraine is planning to build a new 7,000 MW nuclear power plant by 2035, and Energoatom reportedly showed a great interest in applying the Korean-type next-generation nuclear reactor APR 1400.

The APR 1400 is the reactor used for Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Korea's first nuclear power plant export. The reactor is also used for Shin Kori Units 3 and 6 and Shin Hanul Units 1 and 4 in Korea.

KHNP signed an agreement with Energoatom in 2016 to resume the construction of Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 in Ukraine. Construction of the two units started in 1985 but was stopped in 1990 with 20 percent of work done.

KHNP’s latest move has lengthened the list of the overseas nuclear power plant projects eyed by Korea. Among these projects, Korea stands a good chance to win those in Saudi Arabia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
