Samsung Electronics nabbed the top spot in three categories of the patent application rankings last year.

According to the 2014 State of Innovation report released by Thomson Reuters on June 23, Samsung filed 2,179 patents related to mobile telephony, 1,362 patents in semiconductor materials and processes, and 245 patents for smart media last year, which placed the company in the number one position in the world.  

LG Electronics occupied the runner-up position in mobile telephony by filing for 1,678 patents. The world’s largest mobile chipset maker Qualcomm was in the third spot with 1,383 patents, followed by Sony (1,071) and Panasonic (976). 

 

LG was also in second place in semiconductor materials and processes with 1,223 patents. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (1,057 patents), Toshiba (1,045), and IBM (1,036) followed. 

In smart media, Japanese companies took the second, third, fourth, and fifth spots with Toshiba (109 patents), Toppan Printing (103), Sony (78), and Panasonic (74). 

Samsung also ranked fifth in diagnosis and surgery among Asia-Pacific players with 246 patents, and eighth in alternative powered vehicles (444 patents).
