World's First iUICC Solution Commercialized

An iUICC-based communication module is smaller than a 100-won coin.

LG Uplus announced on Sept. 8 that it has certified an integrated universal integrated circuit card (iUICC), a communication solution where the subscriber identification module (SIM) functionality is integrated within a system-on-chip. The new communication module integrates a SIM card, which stores the international mobile subscriber number and its related key.

LG Uplus has become the first mobile carrier to certify iUICC technology for commercial use. It has developed the USIM-embedded communication module together Sony Semiconductor Israel, a Korean telecommunication module development company, and Giesecke+Devrient (G&D), a global company specializing in SIM and security technology.

Communication modules typically have a chipset, RF devices, and memory to allow a device to exchange information with other devices through a network. IUICC integrates SIM functionally into a chipset that processes voice and data signals. SIM is a small memory card that stores personal information to provide subscriber authentication and impose fees in telecommunication services.

Currently, some solutions replace SIM cards with software, but security vulnerabilities have hindered their utilization. Universal SIM (UISM) and embedded SIM (eSIM) solutions also require a separate space and parts for a SIM card, failing to reduce the size of devices.

Yet the iUICC solution will help make IoT devices smaller and lighter as the iUICC function is integrated in a communication chipset. Another advantage is that it becomes easier for users to manage their devices. Without a SIM card, devices can better endure external environments such as high temperature, high pressure, and vibrations, making it easier to use devices and expand device use at special industrial sites.

LG Uplus plans to apply iUICC technology to IoT devices based on NB-IoT and LTE Cat-M1 networks. In particular, the company is considering applying it to devices such as outdoor remote meters that require strong reliability or location trackers that need miniaturization.
