Transparent OLED Panels Used for Subway Train Windows

Passengers look at a transparent OLED display on a subway train in Shenzhen, China.

LG Display has become the first company in the world to supply transparent OLED panels for windows on subway trains in Beijing and Shenzhen, the company announced on Aug. 23.

Transparent OLED panels do not need backlights, so they are garnering much attention not only from mobility companies that produce self-driving cars, aircraft, and subways, but also from various fields such as smart homes and smart buildings.

The 55-inch transparent OLED panels installed on trains for Beijing Subway Line 6 and Shenzhen Subway Line 10, present real-time daily information such as weather forecasts and news, as well as traffic information such as train operation information, subway train location information, subway transfer information, and real-time flight information.

The global market for transparent displays is expected to grow at an average rate of 46 percent annually and reach US$4,933 million in 2024, according to global consulting firm Prescient & Strategic Intelligence.
