The global AMOLED market showed significant growth in the first quarter of this year thanks to the high sales of the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Market research firm UBI Research published a market report for the quarter on June 15. According to the data, quarterly AMOLED sales added up to US$2.3 billion to achieve a 42 percent growth from the previous quarter.

The growth rate had been negative 42 percent during the last quarter of 2013. “The recent growth can be attributed to the increase in the shipment of AMOLED panels by Samsung Display following the release of the Galaxy S5,” the research institute explained.

Another probable reason is the increase in the sales of LG Display, which has continued to manufacture a quantity of plastic OLED and TV OLED panels. At present, LG Display is the only company in the world supplying TV OLED panels. It achieved 50 percent growth in the first quarter of 2014.

UBI Research predicted that the sales volume of AMOLED panels would increase by approximately 60 percent between Q1 and Q2, once Chinese TV manufacturers and LG Display begin to speed up the marketing of OLED TV sets.

However, it is unclear whether such a rapid growth will go on down the road. Experts are pointing out that the biggest variable is the market response to AMOLED-using smartphones and wearable devices.
