Hydrogen Charging Stations to Be Increased to 310 by 2022

Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Chung Seung-il delivers a keynote speech at the 13th Energy Strategy Forum on Aug. 19.

Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Chung Seung-il attended the 2020 Energy Strategy Forum on Aug. 19 and remarked that the South Korean government would invest a total of 586.6 billion won next year in order to assist in hydrogen vehicle R&D and popularization, hydrogen production and supply, the business of companies in the hydrogen industry, etc. He also said that the hydrogen economy of South Korea would be expanded in connection with the government’s New Deal projects.

“Access to a hydrogen charging station within 20 minutes from anywhere in the country is expected to become possible within two years,” he said, adding, “The government will also support the construction of liquefied hydrogen stations, which require land that is just 5 percent of that required for general hydrogen charging stations, so that companies can make a large investment in the new business.”

“The government’s focus on the Green New Deal projects is because of the urgency of response to the accelerating climate change,” he went on to say, continuing, “The projects will result in power supply based on clean energy, smart energy supply infrastructure and more efficient energy consumption.”

The vice minister stressed that the government’s budget expansion in the hydrogen industry would continue until 2022 so that the supply of the hydrogen vehicles including buses and trucks can increase to 81,000 units and the number of hydrogen charging stations can increase from the current number of 42 to 310 by that year.
