TV Shipment Expected to Jump in 2H20

LCD TV panel prices are surging as global demand for TVs is growing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prices of large liquid crystal display (LCD) panels have hit the year’s high on the back of the recovering global TV market.

Prices of LCD TV panels (32-inch to 65-inch) reached the year’s highest levels in July, except for 43-inch products, said market research company Omdia on Aug. 11. Among them, 32-inch panels showed the biggest price increase. The unit price of 32-inch panels reached US$39, up 11 percent from the previous month. As for 43-inch panels, the unit price increased 8 percent from the previous month to US$77, and that of 50-inch panels 7 percent to US$96. Those of 55-inch panels and 65-inch panels posted US$118 and US$177, respectively, up 7 percent and 5 percent from the previous month.

Industry insiders say recovering demand for TVs is fueling the price hike of LCD panels. Governments in countries around the world have come up with measures to boost their economies to overcome recessions sparked off by the spread of the novel coronavirus.

For example, the U.S. government paid up to US$3,600 to a family of four. On top of that, revenge spending came into play. TV manufacturers launched various events and promotions to offset shrinking demand for TVs in the first half of this year. Many consumers bought TVs as they spent longer hours at home due to telecommuting.

Market research firm TrendForce predicted in July that TV shipments will reach 214.11 million units in 2020. The figure was revised upward from the March forecast of 205.2 million. TrendForce's revision of TV shipments seems to be due to expectations for a recovery in the TV market in the second half of 2020.
