A TV That Uses 10,000 to 20,000 Ultra-small LED Chips

Samsung Electronics and other global TV producers are expected to roll out mini-LED (light emitting diode) TVs in earnest next year.

TV market watchers say that global TV makers including Samsung Electronics are expected to roll out mini-LED (light emitting diode) TVs in earnest next year.

A current LCD TV has about 50 LEDs in its backlight, but a mini-LED TV has 10,000 to 20,000 ultra-small 100- to 200-micrometer LED chips in its backlight. Mini-LED TVs are thinner than LCD TVs but offer an 8K resolution, enhance color reproducibility and consume less power. They are premium TVs.

TV companies that are planning to release mini-LED TV models beginning next year include Samsung Electronics, the world’s No. 1 TV maker, and China's TCL, Konga, and Changhong. LG Electronics is also preparing to launch mini-LED TV models.

Market research firm LED Inside reported, quoting a Taiwanese media report, that Samsung Electronics is preparing to roll out more than three million mini-LED TV units in 2021.

DigiTimes in Taiwan reported that mini-LED backlights began to be used for 55- to 75-inch LCD TVs on a trial basis in the first half of 2020, predicting that global shipments of mini-LED TVs would reach one million to two million units next year.

"We are currently testing various technologies for TVs to be released in 2021," a Samsung Electronics official said. An LG Electronics official said given the current level of technology, mini-LED TVs can be released at any time. LG Electronics introduced a mini-LED TV at CES 2020 in Las Vegas in early 2020. Yet the company has not decided yet when to launch the new TVs.
