LG Electronics announced on July 8 that it has released the LG CLOi Servbot, a self-driving service robot. The new robot comes in two types: the drawer type and the shelf type.
LG Electronics supplied its first drawer-type CLOi Servbot to Seoul National University Hospital in Jongno-gu, Seoul. This is the first time that a Korean commercial service robot has been introduced to a local hospital. The robot will be used to deliver various items such as blood samples, prescription drugs, fluids, diagnostic reagents and consumables.
LG Electronics is also planning to operate the shelf-type LG CLOi Servbot at various stores run by CJ Foodville, including Cheiljemyunso, VIPS, Season’S Table, and The Place, starting July.
The drawer type robot comes in handy in hospitals, hotels, and offices. It is 50 centimeters wide, 50 centimeters long and 130 centimeters tall. It has three drawers and can carry up to 15 kilograms. The robot control system allows administrators to remotely monitor the robot's conditions and manage its delivery schedules.
The shelf-type robot will be used mainly in restaurants. It is as large as the drawer type. It can carry up to 20 kilograms of food in its four compartments.
The LG CLOi Servbot can deliver goods sequentially by setting multiple destinations based on self-driving technology. "Excuse me. Here I come," the robot says while avoiding an obstacle using its obstacle avoidance technology. It supports English, so it can be used conveniently even in space with many foreigners.
LG Electronics has launched a total of five robots so far — a guide robot, a home robot, a chef robot, and two types of servbot.
"We hope that LG CLOi robots will be actively used in various places, including hospitals, hotels, restaurants and offices, at a time when non-face-to-face services are spiking," said Noh Jin-seo, executive director of the Robot Business Center at LG Electronics.
