Planning to Hire 1,000 Master and Doctorate-level Engineers

Samsung Electronics announced on July 1 that it has expanded the recruitment of high-level talent in new technology fields such as system semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), and software which will drive growth in the future.

Prior to this, Samsung Electronics hired some 500 doctorate-level engineers in the first half of 2020 alone. Judging from a public recruitment announcement made by the Device Solution (DS) Business Division in March, Samsung is believed to have hired new talent to beef up memory semiconductor research and development (R&D) and secure competitiveness in system semiconductor design and manufacturing. Some of the new employees have been given the task to convert semiconductor production lines into smart factories and upgrade them.

Samsung Electronics' recruitment of high-level talent will continue in the second half of 2020. The company plans to hire as many as 1,000 master's and doctorate-level engineers by the end of 2020. It is the largest-ever recruitment of high-level talent. At the same time, Samsung Electronics is making efforts to secure key global talent, as evidenced by the recent appointment of Sebastian Seung as head of Samsung Research.

Analysts say that Samsung Electronics' aggressive talent recruitment is aimed at establishing a solid management system that can quickly respond to changes in its global business environment. Its management goal is to secure "super gaps" with competitors to maintain its leading position without being affected fierce competition in the global IT industry and conflicts between the United States and China.

In 2018, Samsung Electronics announced a large-scale investment plan worth 180 trillion won and has been focusing its capabilities on future growth engine technologies, including AI, 5G mobile telecommunications, and semiconductors for electronic devices. In April 2019, the company also laid out its plan to invest 133 trillion won to boost its competitiveness in the system semiconductor sector. The hiring of master's and doctorate degree holders is expected to help Samsung build a human and material base needed to implement its two major investment plans.
