Korea’s top machine translation solution company CSLi announced that it became the largest shareholder of French-based SYSTRAN by purchasing a 38.04 percent stake in the world’s largest machine translation solution provider at a press event held in the Plaza Hotel in Seoul on May 27.

As a result, the Korean firm became the world’s No. 1 auto translation solution company under the name of SYSTRAN INTERNATIONAL, which is the nation’s first top-ranked company in the world in the software field.

CSLi’s success is partly attributable to the efforts of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). ETRI started to develop translation technologies in 2011, in partnership with CSLi, and transferred manufacturing technologies to the firm in 2012. Currently, ETRI is providing translation services using related technologies through free translation app GenieTalk.

An official at ETRI remarked, “As our technologies, which are more advanced than those of Google, became commercialization-ready, we handed over them to CSLi under certain conditions.” The official added, “We continue to examine the market through GenieTalk.”
