Broadcasting Equipment

According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) and industry sources on May 27, the government is planning to increase the share of locally-made broadcasting equipment from 26 percent to more than 40 percent by 2018, when the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games is held.

Locally-made broadcasting equipment has been distributed so far, mainly with non-essential equipment such as monitors for broadcasting, program repeaters, and broadcast lights. However, global companies including Sony have dominated the local market for core broadcasting equipment like cameras or large transmitters.

The government plans to increase the weight of locally-made broadcasting equipment, since it is going to start pilot UHD broadcasts in 2018 for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games. The fact that the broadcasting transmission and reception system is getting more friendly to IP packets, in line with the transition from analog to digital terrestrial television broadcasting at the end of 2012, is likely to facilitate the localization of broadcasting equipment.

MSIP is reviewing a measure to provide support for the development of integrated video routing switchers, servers to produce UHD content, integrated video consoles, and wireless transmission systems for content of a group of flight vehicles.
