Korea and the U.S. have agreed to cooperate in the construction of a disaster and safety management system using information and communications technology (ICT). The agreement was made by Choi Mun-kee, Minister of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and Dr. John P. Holdren, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy at the 8th Korea-U.S. S&T Joint Committee Meeting, which was held in the US Patent Office from May 19 to 20 (local time).

The two countries decided to hold working-level meetings in Korea in August to discuss the construction of a disaster and safety management system and the development of technologies to respond to disasters using ICT.

Both sides reconfirmed their willingness to strengthen cooperation in space science, and agreed to hold an ordinary meeting during July to discuss specific areas for cooperation such as space science, space policy, and space exploration, and to come up with disaster relief measures.

As for the ICT R&D field, the two nations made a decision on the expansion of cooperation areas from future Internet to cybersecurity and quantum information communications. Both nations also decided to cooperate with each other for research on the security of the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), networks, and mobile devices, and to move forward with research cooperation in the development of core equipment for next-gen large accelerators and in related nuclear physics.
