2G Service Users Required to Migrate to Other Services

SK Telecom will end its 2G services by June next year as the Ministry of Science and ICT approved on June 12 the company's request for terminating its outdated 2G services.

The company's customers with mobile phone numbers starting with 011 or 017 are required to change their numbers by no later than June next year. The number of the carriers' 2G services totals 384,000.

SK Telecom will provide support for its 2G service customers to migrate to 3G or higher services. It will provide them with free terminals or a subsidy of 300,000 won to purchase a new phone or offer a 70 percent discount on their monthly charges for two years.

The ministry said continued use of the 2G network no longer serves the interests of customers as the quality of the services keeps deteriorating due to outdated systems, shortage of parts and components, frequent breakdowns and the inability to make repairs.

SK Telecom said it will start terminating 2G services in areas with outdated systems from July 6.
