FTC Ends Review of Their Complaints

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have ended their dispute over ads about their TV products.

The Fair Trade Commission said on June 5 that it has stopped a review process on the complaints that the two electronics companies filed against each other.

"We have decided to end the review process as the two companies have withdrawn their complaints and have taken action to address concerns that their ads could lead consumer to misunderstandings about their TV products,” the commission said.

In September 2019, LG Electronics filed a complaint with the commission against Samsung Electronics, arguing that Samsung has violated the Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising by calling its TVs a QLED TV, while they are actually an LCD TV that uses LED backlight. One month later, Samsung Electronics sued LG Electronics for violating the Act on Fair Labeling and Advertising, saying, "LG Electronics criticized our QLED TVs without objective grounds and even included a scene in its ads that could be understood by consumers as using an English swear word against Samsung TVs."

The two companies, however, expressed their intention to drop their mutual complaints last week, and actually withdrew their complaints on June 4. The Fair Trade Commission decided to end the review process, believing that concerns over consumer misunderstandings have been resolved.
