Samsung Electronics will unveil its first Tizen-based smartphones in Russia as early as June. Tizen was first commercialized in wearable devices such as the Galaxy Gear. The industry is paying attention to whether or not the introduction of Tizen smartphones will serve as an opportunity to become a turning point in the expansion of the ecosystem for platforms like TVs, household appliances, and cars.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on May 11 (local time) that Samsung is getting ready to launch its Tizen smartphones in Russia and India.

The newspaper said, “[It appears to be] the latest step in Samsung’s push to compete directly in mobile software with Google and Apple.”

Samsung’s move can be interpreted as its belief that the time has come to show the possibility of Tizen smartphones to developers. The release of a Tizen phone has been delayed for three years since 2011.

Experts are saying that the launch is more likely to be held as an event prior to the 3rd annual Tizen Developer Conference, which will be held at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square from June 2 to 4.

According to the WSJ, the Korean tech giant is testing a Tizen TV in the Indian market. In addition, Tata Motors of Jaguar Land Rover is intensifying efforts to develop a Tizen-based in-car infotainment system. Some Korean mobile solution providers are also trying to develop a solution for cars based on the same operating system.

Based on HTML5, the open-source Tizen OS can be freely upgraded on the Web, and thus it is appropriate for TVs and in-car infotainment solutions. Moreover, Korea’s serious dependence on Google’s Android can be reduced.
