Samsung Electronics’ air purifier and portable HDD won gold awards at the IDEA 2010

Samsung Electronics won the gold awards at the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2010 for its air purifier, Virus Doctor and its G Series portable hard disk drive. The IDEA is one of the most prestigious design awards in the world and presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA).

With its premium simple design, Virus Doctor is a personal ion generator that removes 99.9% of harmful bacteria in the air. A leaf-based pattern has been applied to the exterior of the portable HDD G Series to deliver a unique natural beauty. The G Series already won the gold at the iF Material Award last April for its environmentally-friendly processing of materials.

Samsung’s LED TV 900 won silver for its extreme slimness with a depth of just 0.3 inches and two Mustang UX concepts that feature a customized design targeting North American users, while its all-in-one packaged mobile book won bronze.

Among the finalists were a Post Touch User Interface (in concept) which enables easy movement to functions using touch and balance sensors, an LED 6500 TV featuring tree patterns which delivers feelings of comfort and a blue-ray player (BD-C7500) boasting a 1.1-inch ultra-slim design.

An LED monitor (PX2370) that looks like a glasswork, a multi-monitor (MD230) capable of linking up to six, a twin refrigerator (RZ80/RR82) in modular form with a separated freezer compartment and warmer chamber, an aqua cyclone vacuum cleaner (SD94) which keeps pollutants inside the cleaner using a water filter, and a digital camera (ST550) that provides enhanced convenience with dual LCDs were included in the finalists as well.

In the student competition, the Numlock Handle from the Samsung Art and Design Institute (SADI) won the silver award. This is an analog handle with a dial-type lock, and which was awarded the Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2009 and iF concept award in 2010. By being awarded silver, the analog handle set the extraordinary record of winning the three most prestigious design awards in the world.

Among the other finalists was Snowblower, a snowplow that compresses snow into bricks, and which was created by a student from the Samsung Design Membership.

SADI has collected 59 points from the three competitions since 2006: 36 from the Red Dot Award: Design Concept, 16 from the iF concept award and 7 from the IDEA.

The award ceremony will be held in Portland, USA on August 7.

Following last year, Samsung Electronics has won five major awards once again. It is also high on the list of the biggest award-winning companies during the past five years; clearly demonstrating the company’s design capability.

The company devotes itself to improving design, which, it believes, constitutes the core competitiveness of its soft power in the 21st century, by implementing design-focused management and human resource development initiatives such as SADI and the Samsung Design Membership.

“We will continue to set forth beautiful and practical designs that can satisfy the potential needs of customers,” Yoon Ji-hong, an executive director at Samsung’s design management center said.
