The National Green Tribunal (NGT) of India ordered a deposit of 500 million rupees (8 billion won) from LG Polymers India, a subsidiary of LG Chem, in connection with a gas leak accident. LG Polymers India issued an apology statement with measures for victims of the accident in India.

The NGT ordered a deposit for a gas leak incident which occurred on the morning of May 7 (local time), said local media in India on May 9. The NGT is a special court that evaluates the environmental impacts of industrial projects and monitors companies’ compliance with environmental regulations.

The tribunal also set up a fact-finding committee in order to find out the accident’s process and causes, human and environmental damages, and who will be accountable for the accident. The Andra Pradesh Pollution Control Committee and the Indian Ministry of Environment requested a report on response measures for the accident submitted by May 18.

“We feel a strong sense of responsibility and will make every effort to find out the causes of the accident, prevent the recurrence of similar accidents and treat those who were injured,” LG Polymers said “We focus on stabilizing the factory while place a top priority on giving all possible support to bereaved families and those who were injured.”

“We have established an organization dedicated to helping bereaved families and those who were injured and are providing funeral support for the deceased and medical support for those who have been hospitalized and household goods to those who suffered from the accident. We will actively go ahead with mid- to long-term support projects. ”
