COVID-19 Suppresses Consumer Spending

South Korea's consumer inflation slowed to a six-month low in April as the COVID-19 pandemic weighed on price growth.

Statistics Korea announced on May 4 that the country's consumer price index (CPI) edged up 0.1 percent from a year ago, the slowest increase since October last year when it marked zero percent growth.

The CPI climbed over 1 percent in January and maintained a similar level of growth in February and March.

Core CPI, which excludes volatile energy and food prices, edged up 0.1% in April, slower than the 0.4% in March.

In April, prices of agricultural, fishery and livestock products rose 1.8 percent on-year, while the prices of industrial goods fell 0.7 percent. Services prices edged up 0.2 percent from a year earlier.
