To Develop Mobile Edge Computing Technologies

KT announced on April 23 that it has entered into a business agreement with five global telecommunication companies to form the 5G Future Forum in a bid to spread 5G communication services and secure mobile edge computing (MEC) technology.

KT is aiming to develop business models by applying MEC technology secured through the forum to non-face-to-face industries.

MEC technology reduces latency by applying distributed cloud computing to wireless base stations. The 5G Future Forum consists of major carriers from six continents -- KT (Asia), Verizon (USA), Vodafone (Europe), Telstra (Australia), Rogers (Canada), and America Mobile (South America). In January 2020, KT launched the Future Forum Research Group with operators joining the Future Forum and has been discussing projects for joint research.

Through this business agreement, Future Forum members will develop common specifications that provide interoperability for 5G MEC terminals that are distributed around the world such as the United States, Asia, and the Pacific, and share best practices for global commercialization and discover partners. When a common standard on 5G MEC is established, linking services to platforms will reduce overseas technology transfer time, providing the latest technology to customers faster.

KT plans to actively utilize MEC technologies acquired through the 5G Future Forum in expanding non-face-to-face businesses such as remote medical treatment and online education.
