Galaxy S20 Sales Remain Sluggish

As the Tokyo Summer Olympics was delayed by one year due to the spread of COVID-19, NTT DoCoMo has canceled the Galaxy S20 Plus Olympic Edition.

“We have been preparing for the launch of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics edition of the Galaxy S20 in line with the opening of the Olympics in July, but as the sports event was postponed, we have to cancel the launch of the Olympic edition,” NTT DoCoMo said on April 23.

Pre-orders for the special Olympic edition had been placed through the NTT DoCoMo website and stores since March 18. Even after the Tokyo Olympics was postponed, pre-orders continued, but eventually the launch of the Olympic edition was canceled.

Olympic editions have been used by telecom operators as a tool to promote their services. Yet NTT DoCoMo’s decision to cancel the Olympic edition of the Galaxy S20 will deal a blow to Samsung Electronics' sales of the flagship smartphone, which are sluggish compared to its predecessors. The sales volume of the Galaxy S20 series is about 80 percent of that of the previous Galaxy S10 series.
