A Three-way Competition with LG and Sony

China's Huawei will officially launch its first 65-inch OLED TV X65 on April 26. Through a launch event held on April 8, Huawei emphasized its OLED panel’s perfect black, natural color expression, and thin 1.2-mm bezel. The retail price is 4,200,000 won, not much different from that of LG Electronics’ 2020 edition 65-inch OLED TV.

With the launch of the X65, Huawei has turned the two-runner OLED TV race between LG Electronics and Sony into a three-way competition.

The landscape of the global OLED TV market will witness a big change this year as there will be more players. In 2019, there were a total of 15 OLED TV makers in the world, but four more companies – Huawei and Xiaomi of China, Vizio of the United States and Sharp of Taiwan -- will launch their OLED TV models this year.

Currently, the two front runners of the OLED group are Korea's LG Electronics and Japan's Sony. LG Electronics accounted for 55.2 percent of the global market in 2019, which was estimated at 3 million units, followed by Sony with 22.4 percent, according to market analyst IHS Markit. However, in terms of sales of 75-inch or larger OLED TVs, Sony placed first with 19.1 percent, higher than LG Electronics' 18.2 percent.

OLED TV sales have been on the rise with total shipments hitting 150,000 units in February. Moreover, demand for related products will expand as Samsung Electronics will start to produce OLED-based QD displays.
