Pleading for Exemption of Air Transport Workers from Quarantine

The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have requested the South Korean and U.S. governments to exempt air transport workers from mandatory quarantine and allow express deliveries of medical supplies to medical institutions so that the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic can be better dealt with by further international cooperation.

In their joint statement released on March 29, they stressed the importance of a smooth operation of international freight transport networks for more effective cooperation. “The two-week mandatory quarantine should not be applied to air transport workers who do not come into contact with the general public,” they said, adding, “In addition, both governments need to refrain from export restrictions on essential medical supplies and work with couriers so that medicines and medical equipment can be smoothly supplied.”

The FKI remarked that it would continue to share South Korea’s COVID-19 response experience with the entire world as well as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In this regard, the FKI provided the U.S. Chamber of Commerce with information and data on 10 South Korean companies producing and exporting COVID-19 diagnostic kits.

Earlier, on March 12, the FKI sent 18 trade partner countries requests for allowing the entry of entrepreneurs. Last week, the Global Business Coalition (GBC) and the FKI sent their written proposal on COVID-19 response to the WTO and the OECD. The FKI is planning to hold the 32nd Korea-U.S. Business Council in Seoul in October as previously scheduled. The conference is scheduled to cover economic issues such as contactless marketing and currency swap extension and expansion.
