10-Year R&D Efforts Pay off

The structure of ultra-thin glass

Dowoo Insys has begun mass production of ultra-thin glass (UTG) for supply to Samsung Display.

Doo Insys has recently received approval on its product from Samsung Display and started producing 250,000 sheets of UTG per month, industry sources said on March 12. UTG is used as the cover glass for foldable smartphones. It is used for the Galaxy Z Flip of Samsung Electronics.

Dowoo Insys’ factory in Cheongju, Korea is capable of producing up to 250,000 units per month. The company is preparing to expand production lines as orders are expected to exceed one million units in the future.

Samsung Electronics used CPI film from Sumitomo Chemical in Japan for its previous foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold.

CPI film is vulnerable to scratches and requires replaceable protective film. UTG is less vulnerable to scratches as it is harder than CPI film. UTG also outweighs CPI film in terms of both transmittance and heat resistance. However, UTG has its own disadvantage. It breaks more easily than CPI film.
