Park Chong-ho (third from the left), minister of the Korea Forest Service, holds a ceremony to mark the opening of the preparatory office for the World Forestry Congress 2021 at Dunsan Building in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon, on March 9.

The Korea Forest Service (KFS) launched the preparatory office for the World Forestry Congress (WFC) at a building in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu of Daejeon on March 9.

The launch of the preparatory office signals that the Korea Forest Service has started to make full-scale preparations for the 15th World Forestry Congress, which will be held in Seoul in May 2021.

The preparatory office will carry out tasks such as organizing a steering council and a science and technology advisory group, setting up the agenda of the congress, and publicizing the event through various media outlets.

The World Forestry Congress is the world's largest forestry conference held every six years with the participation of about 10,000 experts from governments, international organizations, NGOs and academia in 160 countries.

“We will share Korea's successful forestation model with the international community and present a Korea-led future forest vision by hosting the World Forestry Congress,” said Ko Ki-yeon, the head of the preparatory office. “It will be a good opportunity to enhance Korea’s profile in the global forest field.”
