Samsung Display announced on Feb. 19 that it has succeeded in commercializing ultra thin glass (UTG) using ultra-thin tempered glass as a material for the industry's first foldable cover window.
The UTG cover window was first applied to the foldable phone Galaxy Z Flip released by Samsung Electronics on Feb. 11. It will be applied to various foldable devices in the future. UTG is made by putting thinly processed 30-micrometer-thick glass through a tempered process that enhances its flexibility and durability. UTG is characterized by its flexibility to be folded while maintaining its rigid nature as glass, smooth feel and the uniformity of its surface.
Samsung Display applied for its trade mark of the newly developed window under the brand name “Samsung UTG” to 38 countries around the world including the United States, the European Union (EU) and China.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display received a certificate on UTG's durability from Bureau Veritas, a French technology certification company. Bureau Veritas said that they found no quality problem in a test to fold and unfold Samsung Display's UTG 200,000 times.
