A Smartphone with Folding Glass Cover

Samsung Electronics is predicted to use an ultra-thin glass cover for the Galaxy Fold 2.

It can be confirmed that the Galaxy Fold 2 leaked not long ago will use an ultra-thin glass cover for the first time in the world, replacing plastic materials. The screen looks flatter and has fewer wrinkles. In fact, this is the correct cover material for foldable phones.

It is predicted that Samsung Electronics will use foldable glass instead of plastic materials for its next-generation foldable smartphone screen. When a glass cover is used, wrinkles from folding and unfolding the screen will be greatly reduced.

"It can be confirmed that the Galaxy Fold 2 leaked not long ago will use an ultra-thin glass cover for the first time in the world, replacing plastic materials," a famous twitterian Ice Universe said on Dec. 24 (local time). "The screen looks flatter and has fewer wrinkles. In fact, this is the correct cover material for foldable phones."

Since foldable phones are folded and unfolded, colorless polyimide (CPI), which is a plastic material, has been used instead of tempered glass. However, the problem with CPI is that wrinkles are created at the folding part.

The company that will supply glass for the smartphone cover is likely to be Dowoo Insys, a Korean company. Samsung Display has recently increased its stake in Dowoo Insys to 27.7 percent, becoming the company’s largest shareholder.

Samsung Electronics has also registered trademarks of “Samsung Ultra-thin Glass,” “Samsung UTG” and “UTG” with the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Samsung Electronics is expected to unveil the Galaxy Fold 2 in San Francisco next February. The new foldable smartphone is a clamshell type that folds up and down. The price is expected to be in the 1 million won range, sharply lower than the 2.39 million won of the Galaxy Fold.
