SK Group Launches Tokyo Forum

SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won

SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won will meet with global IT tycoons, Masayoshi Son, chairman of SoftBank Group and Ma Win, founder of Alibaba, in Tokyo on Dec. 6.

The First Tokyo Forum will be jointly organized by the Chey Jong-hyun Academy and Tokyo University under the theme of “Shaping the Future” at Tokyo University for three days from Dec. 6-8.

The forum was created by an instruction of the SK Group chairman. Chey has held political and economic forums in China, including the Beijing Forum, which was launched 16 years ago, the Shanghai Forum and the Tianjin Forum.

The Tokyo Forum was designed to enhance Chey’s understanding of Japan, which is one of the core pillars of Northeast Asia, and expand his view of the global market. The event will also cover the issue of semiconductor materials supply sparked off by the Japanese government’s export restrictions.

Of particular note is a scheduled special talk between Masayoshi Son and Ma Win. Son recognized the value of Alibaba ahead of others and earned US$140 billion by investing US$20 million in the Chinese e-commerce company. Son’s investment was the seed money for Ma’s Alibaba.

SK Group is expanding its business areas with a focus on the mobility sector. Chey will be able to seize an opportunity to explore global business cooperation through the meeting with Son, who is an influential player in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.
