System integration (SI) company LG CNS won a contract to create a mass transit card system in Athens, Greece, to become the first Korean SI firm penetrating the European public transit market.

LG CNS announced on March 19 that its consortium with Terna Energy of Greece obtained the e-ticketing project order. The contract amounts to US$137.9 million.

The purpose of the project is to set up an automatic fare collection (AFC) system that covers the entire public transport network of Athens. LG CNS is planning to install transit card readers, gates, automatic ticketing machines and the like for the subway, bus, trolley and tram networks for 12 years to come, while setting up a central command center for fare management and computation.

Specifically, the system installation is scheduled to be completed within two years, then LG CNS will run the infrastructure for 10 years after completion. Once the project is completed, local citizens can use public transit cards instead of paper tickets, and enjoy transfer discounts and many other benefits.
