Batteries for Commercial EVs

Samsung SDI's plant in Hungary

Samsung SDI will supply battery cells and modules to Akasol, a German company specializing in manufacturing battery systems for commercial vehicles, trains, ships and construction equipment. The company is capable of producing battery systems for up to 1,500 electric buses per year.

Under an agreement signed last week at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Samsung SDI will supply lithium-ion battery cells and modules amounting to 13 gigawatt-hours (GWh) to Akasol from 2020 through 2027. The two sides agreed not to disclose the value of the contract.

Akasol’s batteries will be supplied to the world's major electric commercial vehicle manufacturers.

Akasol has partnered with Samsung SDI to supply next-generation high performance battery systems to global commercial vehicle manufacturers. The company will produce battery systems in Langen and Darmstadt.

In the meantime, in July, Samsung SDI signed a strategic business agreement with Volvo Group, a global commercial vehicle and heavy equipment company, for next-generation e-mobility. Under the agreement, Samsung SDI and Volvo will jointly develop battery packs for electric trucks. Battery cells and modules will be supplied by Samsung SDI and Volvo will put them together at its local factory.
