KT Hits 1 Million 5G Subscribers

KT has launched 5G roaming services in Italy, Switzerland and Finland.

KT has launched 5G roaming services in three European countries – Italy, Switzerland and Finland, the company announced on Sep. 22. It also said its 5G subscribers surpassed one million on Sept. 21.

For the roaming services, it has partnered with TIM of Italy, by banding together with TIM of Italy, Sunrise of Switzerland and Elisa of Finland.

TIM is Italy's largest telecommunications company with 31.7 million wireless subscribers. The company launched 5G services in June. Currently, it offers 5G services in three cities -- Rome, Naples and Turin -- Italy.

Sunrise, a Swiss telecom company, launched 5G services in 262 cities including Geneva and Zurich in May, while Elisa, Finland's leading carrier, is providing 5G services in five cities including Helsinki.

The roaming services allow KT customers to enjoy YouTube videos and use the “Narle Service” to make full HD video calls with up to eight people. KT 5G roaming services are available for customers who use Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S10 5G handsets first. To use the services, an upgrade of mobile phone software is required. Such an upgrade will be expanded to other models later.

To celebrate the commercialization of 5G roaming services, KT is doing a promotion that offers a free 30-minute voice call for subscribers of data roaming plans by Oct 31.
