Samsung Electronics vice chairman Lee Jae-yong visited Saudi Arabia on Sep. 15 to look around Samsung C&T’s subway construction site in Riyadh.
Lee encouraged officials of Samsung C&T, saying the Middle East is "a land of new opportunities." It was the first time that Lee visited an overseas construction site of a Samsung Group affiliate.
Saudi Arabia launched the Riyadh Metro project in 2013 to build six subway lines with a total length of 168 kilometers. Samsung C&T is currently building three lines with consortium members such as FCC Spain and Alstom France. The construction works are scheduled to be completed in 2020.
The vice chairman’s visit to the site was to further expand Samsung Group’s business in the Middle East. In June this year, he invited Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and discussed mutual cooperation in future growth industries.
The vice chairman stayed abroad on national holidays on many different occasions. For example, he visited Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Xi’an, China during this year’s New Year holidays. He met with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the United States during the New Year holidays of 2016 and met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India during the Thanksgiving holidays of 2016. Also, he had business meetings with American mobile carriers in the United States during the New Year holidays of 2014.
