Refusing to Work Overtime

GM Korea's unionists continue their strike action, refusing to work overtime.

The labor union of GM Korea, which staged a partial strike for two days from Aug. 20, has decided to carry out an additional partial strike on Aug. 23. The union also decided to refuse to work overtime.

As a result, GM Korea's unionists are divided into two groups and each group will go on partial strike for four hours on Aug. 23. Unionists in the production part will also refuse to work overtime from Aug. 23 through Aug. 28. All union staff members will strike for four hours a day from Aug. 26 to 28.

GM Korea unionists’ decision to stage the additional strike will deepen the disputes over wage negotiations this year.

Earlier, on Aug. 20 and 21, GM Korea unionists held a partial strike with the participation of blue-collar and white-collar workers. Julian Blissett, vice president of international operations at the headquarters of General Motors, flew into Korea and met with union leaders, including Lim Han-taek, head of the GM Korea branch of the Korea Metal Workers Union, to persuade them to stop the strike.
