Kia Motors’ Indian plant has begun mass production of the global compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) Seltos.
Kia’s Indian plant has an annual production capacity of 300,000 units. The automaker plans to use it as a base for penetrating India, the Middle East and Asia.
Kia Motors celebrated mass production of the Seltos on Aug. 8 at the plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh of India. The Seltos, the first model produced at Kia's India plant, is a strategic model developed to target the steadily growing global SUV market.
Based on 13 months of local market analysis, Kia customized the Seltos for India, adopting a design and specialized functions that Indian consumers demand.
The Seltos will be officially launched in the Indian market on Aug. 22. Kia says the model is showing a sign of becoming a hit in India. It began to receive pre-orders on July 16 and received a total of 22,073 pre-orders as of Aug. 6.
Kia plans to establish 265 sales and service networks in 160 cities across India before launching the Seltos. It intends to sell 60,000 units of the Seltos a year in the Indian market, making it one of the top five brands in India within the next three years.
Kia is planning to launch other new models in the Indian market next year.
