The HTC One was picked as the best smartphone of this year at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014.

The Global Mobile Awards, hosted by the GSM Association, is one of the most prestigious awards in the mobile industry. The GSMA Award Committee, consisting of experienced analysts and journalists, selects the world’s best mobile phones, telecom equipment and the like each year during the MWC period.

Nokia’s Lumia 520 and LG Electronics were selected as the most economical smartphone and the most innovative device manufacturer. The committee chose the Apple iPad Air as the best mobile tablet, too.

LG Electronics set up a 1,261 m2 booth at MWC 2014 with the theme of Knock and Discover Tomorrow, exhibiting eight smartphone models such as the G Pro 2, G Flex, G2 Mini, and L-series 3.

In the meantime, Samsung Electronics, which swept a lot of mobile industry awards last year, could not win any this year. Samsung won five prizes at MWC 2013, including the best mobile manufacturer and the best mobile equipment manufacturer of the year.

Meanwhile, Korean telecoms companies distinguished themselves in the network segment for two years in a row. SK Telecom’s LTE-A network and KT’s commercial wideband LTE-A service were selected as the outstanding LTE contribution and the excellent mobile technology.

These prizes were newly prepared last year in step with the recent advent of the LTE era. The awards are given to the companies contributing the most to the development of LTE technology across the telecoms, equipment, solution, and platform sectors.

KT and SK Telecom had swept the GSMA Awards in 2013 as well, to prove the excellence of the network industry in Korea. At that time, SK Telecom won the outstanding LTE contribution prize and KT was awarded with a special prize at the Join Innovation Challenge hosted by the GSMA.
