'LG Arc' and 'LG Folds' Registered with KIPRIS

LG Electronics has recently registered trademarks for the names "LG Arc" and "LG Folds."

LG Electronics has recently registered trademarks with Korean intellectual property authorities for the names of its future foldable smartphones.

According to LetsGoDigital, a Dutch online magazine specializing in the IT industry, LG Electronics submitted two notable trademark applications in Korea, which seem to be related to its foldable smartphone. On July 8, LG Electronics had the names “LG Arc” and “LG Folds” recorded at the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS). Both applications have since been approved and classified as Class 9.

“Although it cannot be said with certainty that both applications are related to each other, the description is identical; ‘mobile phone; smartphone touch pen; LED display,’ the report said. In addition to the names, LG also had a logo registered for both applications.

The name "Folds" appears to be intended for LG’s foldable phone, while "Arc" possibly refers to the bendable screen, the report speculates.

LG Electronics has yet to release a foldable smartphone, but this is not the first time for the company to register trademarks for the names of its future foldable handsets.

In October 2018, the company’s CEO announced that they are developing a foldable smartphone, although the company immediately stated that it was too early for it to actually introduce a folding phone.

A month later the company registered several trademarks for the names “LG Flex,” “Foldi,” “Duplex” and “LG Bendi.”

The company’s latest move comes amid reports that Samsung Electronics and Huawei are finally ready to launch their foldable handsets.

Samsung Electronics announced on July 25 that it would release the Galaxy Fold in September. "We have improved the Galaxy Fold after thorough analysis and will release Galaxy Fold models sequentially starting from September,” the company said.

The company was originally scheduled to launch its first Galaxy Fold in the U.S. in April, but delayed the launch after controversy arose among reviewers over its screen defects. Since then, it has been working to sort out the problems.

Samsung Electronics has supplemented all designs of Galaxy folds that had faced controversy over screen defects. It has been confirmed that Galaxy folds that have been modified by improving some of its defects have changed from previous products.

Huawei is also reported to be preparing to launch its first foldable handset in August or September.

LG Electronics has not yet disclosed when it will introduce its first foldable phone.
