Keeping Oracle in Check

Foreign hardware manufacturers are beefing up their collaboration with Korean database management solution (DBMS) companies. The idea is to keep Oracle, which is trying to increase its presence in the hardware market by capitalizing on its dominance in the database market, at bay by combining advanced DBMSs with their hardware technology.

According to industry sources, HP Korea and EMC Korea are engaged in joint product development and marketing with Tibero. HP Korea is planning to mount Tibero’s database on its major non-stop server products. The non-stop servers aim to counter Exadata of Oracle and IBM Mainframe. It seems that the servers’ competitiveness will be improved by means of the inexpensive local DBMSs.

“We are currently going through final performance testing with the non-stop servers mounted with Tibero products,” said Yoon Yeong-woong, managing director of HP Korea, continuing, “The new servers can be a viable alternative, since customers in the market are feeling some burden with the duopoly of Oracle and IBM and the high maintenance costs.”

In the meantime, EMC Korea is going to launch joint marketing campaigns with Tibero in the solid state drive (SSD) storage sector. Their main target includes financial institutions.

“Extreme IO, which was released last year, targets Oracle’s Exadata, and we expect that our collaboration with Tibero will result in a great help,” said EMC Korea, adding, “With Tibero doing well in the banking and public sectors, we can become a nice replacement of Oracle if our wide sales networks and thorough technical support are added to the dominance.”

EMC Korea has mounted Tibero’s DBMS on its Vspex, in which the server, storage, and virtualization solution are integrated, since late last year. The product is at least 10 percent cheaper than the other ones such as the Exadata or the IBM PureSystem. “A lot of foreign hardware makers are asking for collaboration with us nowadays,” Tibero explained, adding, “We will make the best of such opportunities by means of various products and strategies.”
