Planning to Roll out Mobility Services in Global Market

An autonomous driving Robo-Taxi developed jointly by Hyundai Mobis and Yandex based on the new Sonata

Hyundai Mobis unveiled a Robo Taxi in Moscow, Russia on July 11. The self-driving taxi was based on a fully autonomous mobile platform developed jointly with Yandex, Russia's largest internet portal operator. The driverless taxi is the first major achievement of the two companies since they signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on developing a self-driving platform based on deep learning in March.

The model will be widely used for e-hailing in Russia after a test run in Moscow. Hyundai Mobis and Yandex are planning to expand the number of self-driving vehicles to 100 by the end of this year.

"We took the wraps off a Robo Taxi to accelerate the development of a fully autonomous driving platform and introduce mature mobility services to the global market," a Hyundai Mobis official said. “Both companies developed the self-driving taxi in six weeks since starting joint development based on the new Sonata."

To this end, Hyundai Mobis dispatched its researchers to Russia for faster development of the platform. Yandex applied autonomous algorithms to the platform, while Hyundai Mobis zeroed in on the safety of the entire system by installing autonomous sensors and controllers. Based on this collaboration, the two companies are planning to further expand services in the global market in the future.
