Incheon City plans to revitalize the Jung-gu and Dong-gu areas of Incheon, and has announced on February 4 that it will submit a blueprint for the Marine & Harbor Walking & Tour Museum & Art City (MWM City) project.

The project will build a cultural hub in a 2.2km2 area in Jung-gu and Dong-gu in the heart of east Incheon, linking popular tourist destinations such as Chinatown, the foodie neighborhood, with historical sites near the eighth port harbor and renovating the area around east Incheon subway station.

As special legislation has been passed paving the way for government-supported urban revitalization, the city has decided to undertake the project to revamp the east area of Incheon City, which, with its distinct character and historical charm, is an ideal candidate for urban renovation.

A public hearing for the MWM City project is scheduled in the main meeting hall of Jung-gu office on February 6, with citizens and experts in the related fields present.

In the hearing, the city will explain the project that will reconstruct the key areas in the old city, and discuss the details that will cost about 50 billion won (US$46.2 million). The project will link the eighth harbor, the subway at east Incheon station, Chinatown, and Asian Noodle Town, which is to be created in the vicinity.

The project will also include building of the port’s tourist hub, the historical park in and around Incheon Customs Office, and renovation of the traditional market as well.

A city official said, “The hearing will be a platform for all those involved in the revitalization of Incheon’s MWM City project.  With all our hope, for the great city of Incheon and its citizens, we will share all of our ideas and input.”
