Samsung SDI’s new battery will be equipped in the Galaxy Gear 2 wearable device to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014 on February 24. The battery, which is considered core technology for the performance and design of wearable devices, will play a decisive role in deciding the Galaxy Gear’s success.

According to related sources on January 16, Samsung’s Galaxy Gear 2, unlike the previous version, will have a Samsung SDI wearable battery custom-designed for the wearable device inside. Apparently Samsung has kept quiet about the manufacturer of the battery of the former version, but industry insiders think that it was made by Chinese manufacturer.

With Samsung SDI’s battery, the Galaxy 2 is expected to have enhanced significantly, performance-wise, compared to the previous version of the Galaxy Wearable.

The performance of wearable products is largely determined by battery life, portability, and weight. The Galaxy Gear’s previous version used a battery that was 315mAh and could be used for 25 hours without re-charging, but it was bulky and cumbersome to recharge.

Samsung SDI unveiled a variety of curved batteries with various polymer and angular shapes for wearable devices at the InterBattery 2013. The products that were introduced were 0.4 x 1.3cm, ultra-mini curved batteries and angular, detachable curved batteries.

However, some pointed out that it would be difficult right now to make the Galaxy 2 an entirely different product. The new battery was made thinner physically and provided for longer lasting batter life, but fell short of bringing a drastic design revolution. A Samsung SDI source said, “There is little chance for the future-type battery, which was unveiled recently, to be equipped in Galaxy Gear 2 this time.” ‘

The Galaxy Gear 2 will be introduced in MWC 2014 to be held in Barcelona, Spain alongside the Galaxy S5.
